Behind the “simple” task of purchasing a workbench lurk a number of considerations. Whether you are looking for assembly workstations, technical workstations, height-adjustable workstations or accessory systems, follow these steps to choose the right solution.
1. What are you doing on the bench?
This affects everything from size of the workbench to surface material, storage and ergonomics. Do an analysis of work tasks and make a checklist of features needed to perform them.
2. Size / footprint
How much floor space is available? Today’s modular workbenches maximize use of vertical space, so you may not need as big a workbench as you think. How much worksurface area do you need? Does the entire worksurface need to be within arm’s reach?
3. Workflow
Do your workspace, type of work and workflow require a particular configuration? Position your team for maximum efficiency.
4. Storage
Only store items that directly address your tasks. Consider size, shape, weight, quantity, and fragility of stored items.
5. Lighting
Does each station need separate lighting? Does the room have lighting deficiencies? Do you need to diffuse light and reduce glare?
6. Power
Will each workbench house a computer monitor and equipment? Do you need a data beam? Compressed air? How many outlets do you need, and where?
7. Accessories
Take advantage of vertical space above the worksurface to create an efficient workcenter with shelving for manuals or instruments, parts bin rails, a monitor bracket, or a keyboard holder.
8. Ergonomics
Precision work requires a higher worksurface height than heavier work. Are different shifts or different tasks are being performed on the same bench?
9. Standardization
A common workbench platform throughout the facility yields such benefits as better inventory utilization, easier reconfiguration, interchangeability of accessories and aesthetic appeal.
10. Design assistance
Many workbench providers offer free design planning assistance with surveys and CAD drawings.
