ERROR-PROOF RESIDUAL TORQUE MEASUREMENT

The common practice of reading Peak torque to assess residual torque is subject to operator error that can induce false high and false low readings as well as substantially higher variability than installed torque. False high readings are caused by excessive operator follow through after fastener motion has begun and will vary as human reaction time varies. False low readings are caused by the operator releasing the wrench before fastener thread motion has begun.

The solution to this problem is the LightStar residual torque measurement system. This system is based on a high resolution gyro in the head of the wrench. This is coupled with instrumentation and logic that can differentiate between windup or flex in the drive, socket, bolt head, and work piece and actual fastener rotation. The result is a residual torque measurement system that captures residual torque at the instant that fastener rotation begins.
