DEARBORN, MI--The Society of Manufacturing Engineers has published two new books on lean manufacturing.

Lean Manufacturing for the Small Shop explains how small- and medium-sized companies can adopt lean manufacturing practices. The book describes lean manufacturing techniques, provides examples of how they have been used, and explains how they can be implemented step-by-step. The book includes a CD-ROM with training tools to help managers facilitate teams on the shop floor and to help college instructors adapt the material to their curricula. The book costs $60 for SME members and $65 for nonmembers.

The Lean Company: Making the Right Choices provides a template for transforming a business from top to bottom. The book discusses corporate visions and goals, and prescribes general operational strategies that modern companies must employ to stay competitive. The book includes a "scorecard" for tracking the effectiveness of lean changes. The book costs $55 for SME members and $65 for nonmembers.
