General Motors’ engineers have created many different concept vehicles over the last 75 years, starting with the Cadillac V-16 Aerodynamic Coupe, which was unveiled at the 1933 Century of Progress exhibition in Chicago. It stirred the public with radical styling features at the time, such as a fastback design, enclosed running boards, an all-steel roof and a built-in trunk. By the 1950s, the golden age of “dream cars,” design trends were spurred by GM’s popular Motorama exhibits and engineers were inspired by the aerospace industry.
Below is a slideshow looking back at some of the cars that never made it into production. There’s also a sneak peek at what may be rolling down the highways of tomorrow. All photos courtesy GM Media Archive.
