The handling modules HSP and HSW are a new generation of high speed function modules for the automatic transfer, feed, and removal of small parts in confined spaces. This is achieved by means of a guided vertical and horizontal motion sequence. A backlash-free cross-guide with recirculating ball bearing elements ensures high precision and good rigidity. The combination of a rotary drive, either pneumatic or electric, and a slotted guide system produces a compact unit for a complete pick and place system. In comparison to a typical pick and place design with a combination of actuators, these handling modules are more compact and do not require any engineering or assembly time.
Fast pick & place
The HSP pick and place is designed for transferring parts on the same plane. The HSW pick and place is designed for repositioning parts at a 90 degree angle. Both units offer the following features:

Packaged solution means quick and easy installation and commissioning
The HSP and HSW handling modules come as a packaged solution: assembled, tested and ready to go. Festo mechanical grippers, adapter plates, and mounting accessories are easily adaptable and readily available to simplify ordering and installation. The electric versions come with the guiding integrated with the motor (MTR-DCI-HM), and the motor itself combines three components (motor/gearbox, controller, power electronics) in one, saving huge amounts of time traditionally spent integrating these components. In addition to offering a choice of target and teach-in positions, this electrical drive also provides diagnostic information. This ensures optimum reliability and reduces set-up times. Commissioning can be carried out quickly and easily, using a PC and RS 232 interface with the Festo Configuration Tool software (FCT), or via the optional integrated LCD display. Using the FCT software, provided at no cost standard, you can configure your device by teach-in function with 5 pre-configured modes or you can configure up to 15 different positions, in absolute, relative or jog motion. You also have the possibility to do basic force controlled movement for pressing applications.
Electric versus Pneumatic
Pneumatic driving elements such as the Festo DSM swivel actuator are ideal in applications that have two defined discrete points such as a fixed pick & place position. In such scenarios, flexibility is not required and a simple pneumatic actuator would provide a fast, cost effective, and compact solution.
In applications that demand flexibility in positioning, typically arising from the need to handle a variety of products or different sizes of the same product, an electric driving element such as the Festo MTR-DCI-HM integrated motor would be more suitable.
High speed pick & place / Small parts assembly
The HSP and HSW are ideal components for machine builders to integrate into standard and custom turnkey test systems, used for example, in electronic and electro-mechanical parts testing, assembly tasks such as insertion, mating, bonding, and sealing of precision miniature and subminiature metal and plastic components. The two handling modules are well suited for systems ranging from simple, single station lab solutions to high speed, multi-station work cells to meet the demands of high volume production.
