FAA to Fine Boeing $2.75 Million Over Nonconforming Fasteners

July 30, 2013

SEATTLE—FAA is proposing a $2.75 million civil penalty against Boeing Co.’s commercial airplanes unit for allegedly “failing to maintain its quality control system in accordance with approved FAA procedures.” In a statement, FAA said that in September 2008, “Boeing discovered that it had been installing nonconforming fasteners on its model 777 airplanes.”

Robots Paint Boeing Jets

May 31, 2013

EVERETT, WA—Inside Boeing’s assembly plant here, two robots glide along tracks on either side of a 106-foot wing for the 777. The robots wash the wing, apply solvent to remove dirt, rinse and then spray two different types of paint. They even reach into complex spaces inside the open wing root that must be painted for corrosion protection.
