SÖDERTÄLJE, Sweden—Truck manufacturer Scania is recycling the sand from metal casting operations, providing it to a manufacturer of building materials so it can be turned into mortar.
SÖDERTÄLJE, Sweden—Scania is exploring a new kind of bio-based rubber made from birch bark, a forest industry by-product that’s usually burned as waste. The goal is to evaluate low-carbon materials that could one day replace rubber made from petroleum.
At a sustainability conference, a small furniture manufacturer stood out by showcasing real results from applying lean principles, such as reduced scrap and energy savings. Unlike others, this manufacturer integrated sustainability into its core operations rather than treating it as a separate program.
In January, the World Economic Forum added 17 manufacturing facilities to its Global Lighthouse Network. Two of the new Lighthouse facilities are in the United States: the Novelis aluminum factory in Uhrichsville, OH, and Nucor Corp.’s steel mill in Sedalia, MO.
