HANNOVER, Germany—Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles plans to develop an autonomous vehicle for use in mobility-as-a-service applications in urban areas. The robo-taxis and robo-vans will be based on a version of the ID.BUZZ. The goal is to have the electric vehicles ready for use by 2025.
"This year, for the first time, we are conducting field trials in Germany, in which the self-driving system by Argo AI will be used in a version of the future ID. BUZZ,” says Christian Senger, head of autonomous driving at Volkswagen AG. “The aim is to develop a ride-hailing and pooling concept [in which people] have the opportunity to be taken to their destination in selected cities with autonomous vehicles."
“We are setting the course for the future of mobility,” adds Carsten Intra, CEO of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles. “Autonomous, electric driving will make an important contribution to urban mobility and road safety. Our vehicles are the logical first choice to apply such systems to.”
