Carbon-fiber composite materials have been the darling of the aerospace industry in recent years. But, metal still plays a critical role in commercial and military aircraft, especially for applications that involve high temperatures or high stresses, such as engines and landing gear.
PANAMA CITY, FL—GKN Aerospace is planning to invest approximately $50 million to build a new assembly plant here. The factory is expected to create 170 new jobs.
WICHITA, KS—Spirit AeroSystems is spending $20 million to expand its manufacturing facility here, which makes composite subassemblies for the Boeing 787.
LADSON, SC—Aerospace supplier Safran is spending $7 million to expand its assembly plant here. The factory makes landing gear, brake systems and wire harnesses for the Boeing 787 Dreamliner.
EDGERTON, KS—Aerospace supplier Triumph Group has opened a new assembly plant here. The 156,000-square-foot factory will produce a variety of components, including landing gear, seat and cargo tracks, floor beams, thrust reverser beams, stringer end fittings, wing attach fittings, installation brackets, hinge arm assemblies and engine inlet assemblies.
FOLEY, AL—UTC Aerospace Systems is building a new 80,000-square-foot assembly plant here to supply parts for Airbus’ assembly plant in nearby Mobile. Slated to open in 2017, the factory is expected to create 260 jobs.
ORANGEBURG, SC—Modifications are underway at GKN Aerospace’s assembly plant here, as the company prepares for the manufacture of inlet lip skins for the Boeing 737 MAX and 777X.
GOOSE CREEK, SC—Impresa Aerospace, a supplier for Boeing and other aircraft OEMs, has opened a new assembly plant here. The company plans to hire 72 people during the next five years.
TITUSVILLE, FL—Embraer has begun construction of a new assembly plant here. The factory will manufacture seating for jets and is expected to bring 150 new jobs to the area.
ST. CROIX, WI—Airworthy Aerospace Industries Inc., a manufacturer of aircraft interior components, is investing $4.6 million to expand its assembly plant here. The company is expected to create 45 new jobs.
