These days, manufacturers of all stripes are taking a closer at their energy consumption as a potential source of cost savings—even manufacturers of the largest, most expensive products in the world.

ROCHESTER, NH—Two companies that are partnering to manufacture lightweight airplane engine blades are marking the opening of a large production facility here.

LAFAYETTE, IN—GE Aviation is building a $100 million jet engine assembly plant here to produce its next-generation engine for passenger jets.

LONG BEACH, CA—Shimadzu Precision Instruments Inc., which makes flight control systems, air management systems and cockpit display systems, will build a new assembly plant here.

NORTH CHARLESON, SC—Boeing said on Friday that “hairline cracks” had been discovered in the wings of about 40 787 Dreamliners that are in production, marking another setback for the company’s newest jet. The cracks have not been found on planes that are in use by airlines and therefore posed no safety risk.

SHANNON, MS—General Atomics will move production of its electromagnetic components to a state-of-the-art assembly plant here. The project represents an $11 million investment and will create 80 new jobs.

TROY, AL—Lockheed Martin has broken ground for expansion of its cruise missile assembly plant here.
