OPELIKA, AL—Baxter International Inc. will invest nearly $300 million to expand its dialyzer assembly plant here. The company plans to add 200 jobs at the plant by 2016.
SALT LAKE CITY—Varian Medical Systems, a manufacturer of X-ray equipment, broke ground Wednesday on a new expansion project at its assembly plant here and create 1,000 new full-time jobs in the state over the next 20 years.
The wave of automotive recalls this year underscores the importance of putting identification codes on products. Without such codes, consumers would not know if their vehicles were safe, and automakers would not know where or when problem parts were made.
Food-borne illness is no laughing matter. In 1985, a listeriosis outbreak in Southern California killed as many as 40 people. The outbreak was eventually traced to a Mexican-style soft cheese contaminated with the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes.
