NextStar Energy Opens Large-Scale Battery Plant in Windsor, Ontario

WINDSOR, Ontario—NextStar Energy has opened a 4.23 million-square-foot battery manufacturing facility in Windsor, marking a major expansion of electric vehicle supply chain capacity in North America. The company is positioning itself as Canada’s leading provider of battery cells that power everything from AI data centers to municipal and provincial utility grids, as well as e-commerce and technology infrastructure.
The plant, a joint venture originally formed by LG Energy Solution and Stellantis, is Canada’s first commercial-scale battery production facility and has already produced more than 1 million battery cells since launching operations in late 2025.
Backed by more than $5 billion in investment, the facility employs approximately 1,300 workers, with plans to grow to 2,500 as production ramps to full capacity. The plant is designed to support both electric vehicle production and broader energy storage applications.
The project moved from announcement to full production in just over three years, reflecting the rapid pace of investment in battery manufacturing infrastructure as automakers and suppliers scale electrification efforts.
“When LG Energy Solution decided to become the sole owner of NextStar Energy, we did so with absolute confidence. As Canada’s first large-scale battery manufacturing facility, NextStar Energy will play a critical role in powering the nation’s next chapter of electrification,” said David Kim, chief executive officer of LG Energy Solution.
“The official opening of NextStar Energy’s Windsor facility marks a major milestone for Canada’s auto industry. This new center of advanced battery manufacturing will accelerate our leadership in next-generation vehicles by powering the cars we build, reinforce the strength of our energy grids, and develop the strategic technologies our partners and allies rely on. This reflects the industrial progress we are advancing with the Canada-Korean MOU on future mobility and strategic collaboration. Canada is not just participating in the future of mobility, but we are shaping it,” said Mélanie Joly, minister of industry and minister responsible for Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions.
Company officials said the facility will play a key role in strengthening domestic supply chains and supporting long-term growth in advanced manufacturing and energy systems.
