ARMONK, NY—IBM has created a new business unit to sell manufacturing services to original equipment manufacturers. Its range of offerings will include design, test, certification, prototyping and manufacturing for chips, cards, boards and systems.

"We estimate the opportunity for providing these enhanced services could grow to nearly $6 billion within the next 5 years," says Patrick Toole, general manager of the new division. "For the first time, we have a single organization dedicated to providing comprehensive design services to our customers."

Original equipment manufacturers will be able to hire IBM to do their chip design, component fabrication, card and board assembly and the complete outsourcing of all aspects of design and manufacturing of subsystems and systems.

The division is part of IBM’s Technology Group and will draw its expertise from existing IBM organizations.

IBM initially will concentrate its design services in the communications and consumer sectors of the information technology industry and will then expand into the storage system, server, automotive, medical, defense and aerospace industries.
