GREER, SC—Proterra Inc. is investing $76 million to build a new assembly plant here to make batteries for electric commercial vehicles, such as buses and delivery trucks. The 327,000 square foot factory is expected to employ more than 200 people over the next several years.

Expected to start production in the second half of 2022, the factory is the company’s first on the East Coast and its third nationwide. In December 2020, the company opened its second battery production site co-located in its electric bus assembly plant in Los Angeles County.

“Electric vehicle technology is an opportunity to create clean energy jobs, strengthen American manufacturing, and advance the U.S.’s climate leadership on a global scale,” says Gareth Joyce, Proterra’s president.
