TOYOTA CITY, Japan—As reported by Automotive News, Toyota has announced a production halt for the RAV4 in Japan, starting March 10, 2025, following an explosion at a key supplier, Chuo Spring Co. The incident, which occurred on March 6 in Toyota City, resulted in one fatality and two injuries. The cause remains unclear but has disrupted Toyota's domestic supply chain.
As a result, Toyota will temporarily close one of two lines at its Takaoka plant and two additional lines at a Toyota Industries Corp. factory. This disruption could impact RAV4 and Harrier deliveries, though Toyota is exploring recovery production.
While most RAV4s sold in the U.S. are produced in North America, 21%—including the Plug-In Hybrid—are imported from Japan. In 2024, Toyota sold 475,193 RAV4 units, making it the best-selling vehicle in the U.S., surpassing the Ford F-150. The company will reassess the situation on March 10.
