COLOGNE, Germany—Ford has launched mass production of electric vehicle battery packs at its new, state-of-the-art assembly facility in Cologne. The plant, part of a $2 billion transformation of the historic site, will produce three sizes of drive batteries exclusively for the all-electric Ford Explorer 1 and Capri 2—both assembled on-site at the Cologne Electric Vehicle Center.
This in-house production enhances quality control, streamlines logistics, and aligns with Ford’s push to modernize its European operations. The highly automated line features 180 robots assembling each battery pack from approximately 2,775 components.
A cornerstone of Ford’s European manufacturing for nearly a century, the Cologne plant now stands as a model of the company’s shift toward electrification. The initiative not only boosts production efficiency but also invests in upskilling employees as part of its “Factory of the Future” vision.
Alongside EV production in Romania, Turkey, and the UK, the Cologne facility is central to Ford’s strategy to deliver high-quality electric vehicles for the European market.
