LIBERTY, NC—According to a report by the Triad Business Journal, Toyota’s new battery plant near Liberty, North Carolina—Toyota Battery Manufacturing North Carolina—has begun shipping hybrid-electric battery modules to its vehicle assembly plants, marking a major milestone in the company’s electrification strategy.
Initial shipments are headed to Mazda Toyota Manufacturing in Huntsville, Alabama, for use in the Toyota Corolla Cross. Starting in September, hybrid modules will also be sent to Toyota Kentucky in Georgetown for installation in the hybrid Camry.
As stated on Toyota Battery Manufacturing North Carolina's website, the 7-million-square-foot facility features 14 battery production lines—four dedicated to hybrid electric vehicles and 10 for battery electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. The $13.9 billion investment is expected to create 5,100 jobs. Located on 1,850 acres, the Liberty plant will produce lithium-ion batteries and has already committed $3.5 million in community donations since its groundbreaking in 2021.
