SANTA CRUZ, CA— Joby Aviation has announced the expansion of its manufacturing facility in Marina, California, doubling its aircraft production capacity across a newly scaled 435,500-square-foot site. The expanded space is designed to support the company’s commercial readiness efforts and accelerate the production of its all-electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. The company also added a new aircraft to its test fleet, which received airworthiness certification just one week after completion.
The Marina expansion is complemented by Joby’s newly renovated facility in Dayton, Ohio, where production is ramping up to build and test aircraft components. Together, the sites demonstrate Joby’s commitment to U.S.-based innovation, manufacturing, and job creation as the company prepares for FAA certification and scaled commercial service.
By leveraging Toyota’s world-class manufacturing expertise, Joby is streamlining operations for quality, efficiency, and scalability. Toyota engineers are deeply embedded in Joby’s operations, offering support on tooling, assembly optimization, and design-for-manufacturing best practices. Joby’s vertically integrated model—covering everything from design and production to pilot training and service operations—positions the company to move quickly from prototype to scale.
At full capacity, the Marina facility will be capable of producing up to 24 aircraft per year and will serve as a hub for pilot training, flight testing, maintenance, and FAA production certification. In addition to its Marina and Dayton sites, Joby’s broader manufacturing network includes its innovation headquarters in Santa Cruz and its powertrain and electronics facility in San Carlos, California.
The expansion was made possible by strong public-private collaboration, including a $9.8 million grant from California’s GO-Biz program and a $10 million cost-reduction initiative through the California State Treasurer’s Office. Hundreds of full-time roles are expected to be added across the company’s California and Ohio operations.
