Hitachi to Build New Power Transformer Factory in Virginia

RALEIGH, NC—Hitachi Energy, a subsidiary of Hitachi Ltd. plans to invest more than $1 billion in the United States. It will include a state-of-the-art factory in South Boston, VA, that will assemble large power transformers. The products will support applications like high-voltage transmission, power generation and data centers.
"The United States is a key market for [us], and this investment reflects our commitment to powering America’s energy future to meet the accelerating demands for reliable and sustainable solutions to benefit the nation,” says said Toshiaki Tokunaga, president and CEO of Hitachi. “Leveraging our expertise in IT, operational technology and advanced products, we are supporting American manufacturing, the development of critical infrastructure and the rapid expansion of data centers driven by AI adoption.”
“Power transformers are a linchpin technology for a robust and reliable electric grid and winning the AI race,” adds Andreas Schierenbeck, CEO of Hitachi Energy. “Bringing production of large power transformers to the U.S. is critical to building a strong domestic supply chain for the U.S. economy and reducing production bottlenecks, which is essential as demand for these transformers across the economy is surging.”
Hitachi also just opened a new $100 million factory in Hagerstown, MD, to build railcars.
