Hitachi Rail's new Maryland factory

September 9, 2025

HAGERSTOWN, MD—Hitachi Rail recently celebrated the grand opening of its $100 million, 307,000-square-foot lighthouse digital factory in Hagerstown, Maryland. The state-of-the-art, carbon-neutral facility will produce up to 20 railcars per month, supporting major contracts in Washington, D.C., Baltimore, and Philadelphia.

The next-generation plant features more than $30 million in digital enhancements, including AI-powered HMAX solutions, real-time supply chain monitoring, and 3D printing capabilities. It also includes a customer experience center showcasing Hitachi Group’s transformative digital technologies for the rail sector and broader industries.

The new factory will directly employ 460 workers, sustain 1,300 jobs overall, and generate an estimated $350 million in annual economic impact for the region. Designed for sustainability, the site operates with zero landfill waste, sources 100% renewable electricity, and offsets 800,000 kg of CO2 annually through solar power.
