SÄFFLE, SWEDEN —Volvo Autonomous Solutions (V.A.S.) has produced its first factory-built Volvo FH Autonomous truck at the Volvo Buses plant in Säffle. The achievement marks the company’s initial step toward large-scale industrialization of autonomous mining vehicles. The Säffle facility, long recognized for its manufacturing expertise, has successfully integrated V.A.S.’s advanced autonomous technologies, including onboard computing, LiDAR, radar, cameras, and IMUs into the Volvo FH platform. The result is an OEM-grade autonomous truck designed for demanding haulage environments. “This milestone reflects the strength of combining our engineering with the Säffle plant’s proven manufacturing capabilities,” said Cecilia Ekström, Head of Autonomy Enabled Vehicles and Machines at Volvo Autonomous Solutions. “Moving from workshop builds to factory production is essential to delivering reliable autonomous trucks at scale.” Plant Manager Thomas Persson welcomed the collaboration, noting the facility’s readiness to support the production of sophisticated autonomous vehicles. The new FH Autonomous builds on real-world experience from earlier generations already operating in Nordic mining sites, including Brønnøy Kalk in Norway and Boliden’s Garpenberg mine. With the first factory unit complete, V.A.S. plans a gradual production ramp-up to meet growing regional demand for autonomous haulage solutions.
