Mercedes-Benz To Invest $4 Billion In Alabama Assembly Plant

TUSCALOOSA, AL — Mercedes-Benz will invest $4 billion in its Tuscaloosa, AL, assembly plant by 2030, reinforcing the facility’s role as a central hub in the company’s global SUV production network.
The investment is part of a broader plan to spend more than $7 billion across U.S. operations over the next several years, underscoring the strategic importance of domestic manufacturing to the automaker’s global footprint.
The Tuscaloosa plant assembles a range of SUVs for both the U.S. and export markets, including the GLE, GLS and GLE Coupe, along with performance variants and all-electric models such as the EQE SUV and EQS SUV. The company also plans to add production of the GLC at the facility, further expanding its manufacturing scope in Alabama.
Approximately 60 percent of vehicles produced at the plant are exported, making the operation one of the largest automobile exporters in the United States and a key contributor to the company’s global supply chain.
The investment announcement coincided with the production of the 5 millionth SUV at the Tuscaloosa facility, marking 30 years of continuous operations. The milestone was celebrated alongside the debut of updated GLE and GLS models, though the long-term significance lies in the continued expansion of manufacturing capacity and capability at the site.
Since opening in 1995, the plant has grown into a cornerstone of Mercedes-Benz’s U.S. manufacturing strategy. The facility employs approximately 5,800 workers and supports production for global markets, reflecting its role in both domestic assembly and international distribution.
Looking ahead, the planned investment will support ongoing production of both internal combustion and electric vehicles, positioning the Tuscaloosa plant to adapt to evolving product requirements while maintaining its role in Mercedes-Benz’s global manufacturing network.
The announcement comes as Mercedes-Benz marks its “140 Years of Innovation” milestone in 2026.
