GE Appliances Invests $28 Million In Alabama Refrigeration Plant Upgrades

DECATUR, AL—GE Appliances is investing $28 million in its refrigeration manufacturing plant in Decatur, AL, upgrading production equipment and expanding on-site services as part of its broader U.S. manufacturing strategy.

The investment includes new automated thermoforming machines used to produce interior liners for refrigerator compartments, improving efficiency and increasing production capacity across multiple models. The plant operates on three shifts and produces high-volume refrigerator units for the U.S. market.

Additional upgrades include facility improvements such as new lighting and air-conditioning systems aimed at enhancing working conditions on the factory floor.

The Decatur facility is the largest refrigeration manufacturing operation in the United States and a key part of GE Appliances’ domestic production network. The investment supports the company’s previously announced $3 billion plan to expand U.S. manufacturing over the next five years.

The company also opened a new on-site primary care clinic for employees and their families, part of a broader effort to improve workforce support and retention. GE Appliances said similar programs at other manufacturing sites have increased primary care visits and reduced avoidable emergency room usage.

“Investing in advanced manufacturing and employee health is a winning combination that strengthens our business,” said Rocki Rockingham, chief human resources officer at GE Appliances.

GE Appliances employs approximately 1,600 workers in Alabama and supports additional jobs through its supplier network and operations. The Decatur investment is expected to strengthen production capacity while reinforcing the plant’s role in supplying high-volume refrigeration products for the U.S. market.
