ATHENS, GA—Caterpillar’s new assembly plant here could create twice as many indirect jobs as the 1,400 workers who will be on the company’s payroll, Gov. Nathan Deal predicted Tuesday.
TRENTON, TN—About 250 jobs are expected to be created when MacLean Power Systems opens a new assembly plant here. The facility will make connectors, anchoring systems and other components for electrical transmission systems.

WASHINGTON—The number of first-time claims for unemployment insurance fell by 23,000 last week from the week before, and orders for durable goods rose 9.9 percent in September from August—the biggest monthly increase in nearly three years.
