SMYRNA, TN—A minor fire developed early Thursday morning in the body line at Nissan’s assembly plant here. Employees in the immediate area were briefly evacuated, and no injuries were reported.
CANTON, MS—Nissan will build a 1 million-square-foot campus for its suppliers just north of the its assembly plant here. The facility could create 800 to 1,000 jobs.
SMYRNA, TN—A maintenance technician has been killed in an accident at the body shop of Nissan’s assembly plant here. The technician, Michael Hooper, 43, had worked at the plant for 21 years.

TOKYO—Nissan is planning to build a new assembly plant in North America to make cars for its luxury vehicle division Infiniti. The $2 billion facility will have a capacity of 100,000 vehicles per year and is expected to begin production in 2017.
DECHERD, TN—Production workers at Nissan’s assembly plants in Smyrna, TN, and Decherd, TN, and Canton, MS, will get a pay raise in October, their first since 2006.
In early March, UAW officials met with workers from Nissan Motor Co.’s assembly plant in Smyrna, TN, to lay the groundwork for a third union representation vote. Plant employees turned down the UAW by a 2-to-1 margin in 2001. A 1989 attempt to organize the plant also failed.
