WASHINGTON – Suppliers to U.S. aerospace and semiconductor manufacturers are facing tightening supplies of key rare earth materials.

In January, Samsung Electronics forecast a worsening chip shortage this year, thanks to burgeoning demand for AI data centers. The race to build AI infrastructure has prompted chipmakers to divert manufacturing capacity toward high-bandwidth memory for AI servers, squeezing the supply ‍of conventional memory chips.

TOKYO—Honda Motor Co. has halted operations at its assembly plant in Mexico due to a shortage of semiconductors stemming from tensions between the Netherlands and China over a Chinese chipmaker.

MALTA, NY—Lockheed Martin and GlobalFoundries (GF) are collaborating to advance U.S. semiconductor manufacturing and innovation and to increase the security, reliability and resiliency of domestic supply chains for national security systems.

LEHI, UT—Texas Instruments Inc. will build its next 300-millimeter semiconductor wafer fabrication plant here. 

BOISE, ID—Micron Technology Inc. plans to invest approximately $15 billion through the end of the decade to construct a new factory here to make memory chips. This will be the first new memory manufacturing fab built in the U.S. in 20 years, ensuring a domestic supply of memory chips required for automobiles, data centers and other applications.

DETROIT—The global shortage of computer chips and other parts has forced General Motors to build some 95,000 vehicles without certain components during the second quarter.

WINDSOR, ON—Stellantis NV has idled production at its assembly plant here, where it makes the Chrysler Pacifica minivan.
