SACRAMENTO, CA—The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has unveiled new regulations for operating autonomous vehicles in the state. The new rules are the most comprehensive AV regulations in the United States.
The regulations expand safety and oversight requirements for all classes of AVs. Under the new laws, driverless vehicles operated by Waymo, Zoox and other companies can be cited for moving violations. The DMV will issue a Notice of AV Noncompliance to manufacturers when an autonomous vehicle violates traffic safety laws.
Operators must also respond to first responder calls within 30 seconds. And, local emergency officials can issue electronic geofencing directives to clear autonomous vehicles from active emergency zones.
“California continues to lead the nation in the development and adoption of AV technology, and these updated regulations further demonstrate the state’s commitment to public safety,” says DMV Director Steve Gordon. “These updates support the growth of the AV industry by enhancing public safety and transparency while adding additional accountability for AV manufacturers.”
