SPRING HILL, TN—General Motors plans to invest $275 million to upgrade its 36-year-old flexible assembly plant here. The funds will support internal combustion engine (ICE) production.
GM plans to refurbish equipment, extend the life of the 2.7L turbo engine program and support continued ICE production for popular Chevrolet and GMC pickup trucks, such as the Canyon, Colorado, Sierra and Silverado.
The investment will also support a future Cadillac ICE product. Once it is added to the lineup, Spring Hill will become a five-vehicle operation.
The facility opened in 1990 to build Saturn sedans. At the time, it featured innovative skillet conveyors that enabled assemblers to raise and lower vehicles to ergonomically correct heights. The plant also pioneered the use of electric fastening tools that minimized torque reaction on operators
