AIA: Vender Cuts Costs for Systems Builder

August 7, 2005

Dial Tool Industries Inc. (Addison, IL) is a full-service manufacturer with extensive experience in prototyping, tooling, stamping, automation and molding. It operates ISO9000 and QS9000 certified manufacturing facilities in the United States, Mexico and China.

About 2 years ago, having long employed automation in its own manufacturing processes, Dial Tool Industries created a separate division offering turnkey automation systems, integration, process analysis and system updates to customers in search of lower labor costs, greater yields and better quality product.

In the beginning the company spent a lot of time and energy machining system components in-house. But it has since been able to reduce both costs and lead times by obtaining parts from Misumi USA Inc. (Schaumburg, IL).

Established in 1988 as a subsidiary of Misumi Corp. (Tokyo), the company supplies both standard and custom mechanical components for factory automation, press and plastic die applications. It also provides cutting tools and gauges.

Dial Tool Industries' first order was for a shipment of couplings used in an automatic sorting machine. Since that time, it has become a regular customer, turning to Misumi for pulleys, pushers, shafts, belts and other components used in building its equipment.

"We now go through their catalog and design machinery based on what is available, knowing that the parts will be delivered fast, and that we'll have access to the 3D CAD file to pop into our drawings," says Dial Tool Industries engineer Dave Thorton. "The end result is that we can deliver to our customers automation machinery that is designed and built faster, and much more efficiently without adding staff."

Dial engineers download 3D CAD native files directly from the Misumi Web site to production drawings created with Autodesk Inventor, saving time and reducing the possibility of errors. Misumi's file library supports a number of CAD formats, including AutoCAD, Mechanical Desktop, Smart Sketch, Solid Edge, Inventor, Pro/ENGINEER, Catia, IntelliCAD and TurboCAD.
