LONDON—Meritor Inc. plans to supply drivetrain components to Volta Trucks Ltd. The Swedish startup company’s first product will be the Volta Zero, a delivery truck for use in congested urban environments. Production is due to start next year at a factory in England.
The Volta Zero will be the first large commercial electric truck in Europe to use an innovative e-axle to drive the rear wheels. Meritor will supply the single unit, which contains an electric motor, transmission and rear axle.
“The Blue Horizon 14Xe fully integrated power train is lighter and more efficient than a conventional electric motor and axle set-up, delivering an increased range as a result,” claims Ken Hogan, senior vice president of Meritor. “It also provides packaging benefits by freeing up space between the chassis rails to provide the safest possible location for the vehicle’s battery.”
