Swiss Medical Device Manufacturer Opens US Assembly Plant
The $220 million factory is equipped with advanced injection molding technology and fully automated assembly lines.

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC—Swiss manufacturer SHL Medical has opened a new state-of-the-art assembly plant here to produce of autoinjectors. The project represents a $220 million investment.
The 360,000-square-foot facility will produce SHL Medical’s advanced autoinjectors, which are used in high-demand treatments for conditions such as diabetes, obesity and autoimmune disorders. SHL Medical said that the new factory will ensure a reliable supply of the drug-delivery devices to U.S. patients, while reducing lead times and transportation costs.
“This facility marks a key step in our global expansion and strengthens our ability to meet the increasing demand for autoinjectors,” says Ulrich Faessler, CEO of SHL Medical.
Indeed, the global market for autoinjectors was valued at $120 billion in 2023 and is projected to grow at an annual compound rate of 11.4 percent through 2032, according to Fortune Business Insights.
SHL Medical is based in Zug, Switzerland, and has operations in Sweden, Taiwan, and Deerfield Beach, FL. The company chose South Carolina for its flagship U.S. factory because of a “strong pipeline of skilled labor and a favorable business environment,” says Faessler.
The factory is equipped with advanced injection molding technology and fully automated assembly lines. All of the molding machines are fully electric. At full capacity, the factory will run 110 injection-molding machines.
Next year, SHL Medical will open a new 226,000-squarefoot assembly plant in Zug. That factory will be able to produce approximately 80 million autoinjectors annually.
Worldwide, the company is on track to deliver 1.5 billion medical devices to customers in this year.Looking for quick answers on assembly and manufacturing topics? Try Ask ASM, our new smart AI search tool. Ask ASM
