HORNELL, NY—Alstom opened a state-of-the art factory here to build bilevel passenger cars for use on Chicago’s Metra commuter rail system. The 135,000-square-foot facility will assemble stainless steel car body shells.
Alstom previously manufactured car bodies for U.S. projects at its facility in Brazil. The investment in Plant 4 reshores production and cements Hornell’s position as the largest passenger train manufacturing site in the country.
The car body manufacturing process involves welding together primary parts to create assemblies as long as 80 feet. Alstom’s new facility will be equipped with welding robots that feature cutting-edge AI technology that enables enhanced quality and lower production costs.
“When we invest in American manufacturing, we create good jobs that have a ripple effect across the entire region,” says said Michael Keroullé, president of Alstom Americas. “We’re not just building trains; we are creating opportunities in Hornell and across the country. Plant 4 upholds our long-standing commitment to making trains in America, and it expands our ability to deliver cutting-edge rail [products] for our customers.”
