DETROIT—Michigan has a long, proud history of boat building. The next chapter is being written by Voltaic Marine, a start-up company that is developing a 24-foot-long electric boat with an aluminum hull. It will feature a 570-hp motor and a 300-kilowatt hour battery.
The AEW24 will be built by Detroit Manufacturing Systems (DMS) and Kinetyc, its advanced manufacturing division. The contract manufacturer plans to ramp up full-scale commercial production sometime next year.
“This is more than a manufacturing contract,” says Bruce Smith, chairman and CEO of DMS. “It’s a shared mission to electrify the future of maritime. Voltaic brings game-changing marine innovation, and we bring the manufacturing muscle and precision to bring it to life at scale.”
“Partnering with DMS and Kinetyc is a major milestone for Voltaic,” adds Richard Phamdo, CEO of Voltaic Marine. “Their manufacturing strength and shared focus on quality and innovation put us in a strong position to scale with purpose. This is how we move the marine industry forward.”
Kinetyc operates a 100,000-square-foot facility in Wixom, MI, that is equipped with state-of-the-art production technology. It specializes in everything from prototyping and batch builds to full-scale production. According to Smith, the company “empowers businesses to bring products to market faster and scale smarter.”
