LAKE CRYSTAL, MN— In a heart-warming story covered by KARE 11, while repairing a 2015 Ford Edge at his auto shop in Lake Crystal, Minnesota, mechanic Chad Volk stumbled upon an unexpected find: a leather wallet tucked beneath the vehicle’s air box, sitting on top of the transmission. Chad discovered a Ford Motor Company employee ID inside the wallet. Using Facebook, he tracked down the wallet’s owner, a retired Ford autoworker named Richard Guilford, who now lives in Michigan.
Richard immediately recognized the wallet and recalled losing it 11 years earlier while working a night shift at a Ford plant. He had been fixing electrical issues on Ford Edges that had just arrived from the Chicago assembly plant. That night, on a rare occasion, he happened to be carrying his wallet in his shirt pocket when he leaned over a car and the wallet slipped out. Despite searching the lot and narrowing down the cars he’d worked on, the wallet was never found—until now.
Over the years, the SUV made its way from the factory to a dealership in Arizona and eventually to Minnesota, racking up 150,000 miles. The wallet was returned to its owner with everything intact, including $15 in cash, expired lottery tickets, and $250 in Cabela’s gift cards, which Richard confirmed were still valid. The two men connected via Zoom, sharing laughs over the long-lost wallet’s journey.
