ELLABELL, GA—Several major U.S. media outlets, including CNN and CBS have reported that yesterday, on Thursday, September 4, federal authorities detained approximately 475 individuals during a large-scale immigration enforcement operation at the Hyundai Metaplant in Bryan County, Georgia. Officials say the action represents one of the largest single-site operations in the 22-year history of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
The coordinated effort involved ICE, Homeland Security Investigations, Border Patrol, FBI, Drug Enforcement Administration, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, IRS, and the Georgia State Patrol. Authorities executed a federal search warrant as part of an ongoing criminal investigation into allegations of unlawful employment practices and other federal crimes.
Construction on the site’s adjacent electric vehicle battery plant was temporarily halted during the operation. Hyundai officials stated the company is cooperating fully with law enforcement and remains committed to following all labor and immigration regulations. Normal operations at Hyundai’s electric vehicle manufacturing plant continued without interruption.
