Tata Electronics Builds Elephant-Proof Wall to Protect Assam Chip Plant

ASSAM, India—Tata Electronics is constructing one of India’s largest outsourced semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT) plants in Jagiroad, Assam, as part of the Rs 76,000-crore India Semiconductor Mission. To safeguard sensitive chip-making equipment from ground vibrations caused by elephants, the company, in collaboration with the state government, is building a massive “elephant-proof” wall around the facility.
The site has also seen frequent snake encounters, prompting Tata Electronics to station rescuers full-time to safely capture and release the reptiles without harming their habitat.
Company leaders and state officials emphasized that the protective measures are essential to ensure construction stability, equipment precision, and worker safety. The project, which has drawn interest from Tesla as a prospective customer, highlights the complexities of building advanced semiconductor infrastructure in areas with high wildlife density.
