Final Subaru Legacy Rolls Off Indiana Assembly Line

Subaru of Indiana Automotive employees commemorated the last Legacy coming to the end of the assembly line
LAFAYETTE, IN—Subaru of Indiana Automotive (SIA) has rolled its final Legacy sedan off the assembly line, closing a 36-year chapter for the automaker’s first U.S.-built model. The last vehicle, a Magnetite Gray Limited, was produced Sept. 12.
The Legacy debuted in 1989 as the first Subaru manufactured outside Japan and went on to sell nearly 1.4 million units across seven generations. Its discontinuation reflects the broader U.S. market shift from passenger cars to SUVs and crossovers, as well as Subaru’s move toward electrification.
SIA will wrap up U.S. production of the Outback in early October before shifting to build the Forester, including a new hybrid version slated for spring 2026. The plant currently produces the Ascent, Crosstrek, and Outback, and is expected to mark its eight millionth vehicle this November.
“This is a bittersweet moment,” said SIA President Scott Brand. “But we’re excited to begin a new era with the Forester and Forester Hybrid.”
