Boeing Breaks Ground on $1 Billion Expansion to Boost 787 Output in South Carolina

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC—Boeing has officially begun construction on a major expansion of its Boeing South Carolina (BSC) site in preparation for increased production of its 787.
The project entails a $1 billion investment and will support 1,000 new jobs over the next five years to help the company reach its planned 2026 production rate of 10 Dreamliners per month.
Key elements of the expansion include:
- A new 1.2-million-square-foot final assembly building, mirroring the size of the current facility.
- New parts-preparation and vertical fin paint facilities, Flight Line stalls, and additional capabilities at the Airport Campus.
- Growth of the Interiors Responsibility Center, which builds many of the 787’s interior components.
The 787 program continues to see robust demand, with 90 customers placing over 2,250 orders to date and nearly 1,000 aircraft in backlog, including more than 300 orders this year. Boeing projects a global need for 7,800+ widebody jets over the next 20 years.
BSC has produced all three Dreamliner variants—787-8, 787-9, and 787-10, for more than a decade, and currently employs over 8,200 people across its North Charleston and Orangeburg campuses.
