Start-up Aims to Make Humanoid Robots for Military
Robot could carry weaponry into battle.

SAN FRANCISCO—A variety of start-ups are developing and manufacturing humanoid robots for factories, warehouses, healthcare providers and even households. Now, a new start-up, Foundation Future Industries Inc., is developing humanoid robots for a different customer—the U.S. military.
Some 5 feet, 9 inches tall and weighing 180 pounds, Foundation’s Phantom humanoid is designed to carry a maximum payload of 44 pounds, including lethal weaponry. The company plans to build 40 robots this year, 10,000 in 2026, and 40,000 in 2027.
“Pretending that you don’t need to weaponize robots...sounds virtuous on face value, but it really isn’t,” says Sankaet Pathak, CEO of Foundation.
Pathak foresees the robots doing surveillance assignments or grunt work, such as ferrying weapons and ammunition to soldiers. Humanoids could also take risks that officers don’t want soldiers to undergo, such as entering a cave or a building to search for enemy combatants.
The Phantom can be used for manufacturing and warehousing applications, as well. Foundation’s business model is to lease the robots, rather than sell them.
Designed for strength and fluid motion, Phantom does not have the “robotic” feel of other humanoid models, enabling seamless integration into human environments. The upper torso is Phantom’s operational hub, integrating computers, cameras, batteries, and advanced sensors.
The lower torso powers Phantom’s mobility and stability, featuring an advanced balance system and actuators. The robot can navigate stairs, uneven terrain and confined spaces, supporting a range of activities. Proprietary cycloid actuators give the robot power and precision. These compact and quiet actuators deliver the performance of hydraulics with the efficiency of electric motors.Looking for quick answers on assembly and manufacturing topics?
