Selective Soldering System Boosts Output at Meter Manufacturer

SKANDERBORG, Denmark—Kamstrup, a Danish manufacturer of smart water meters, is using selective soldering equipment from Nordson Electronics Solutions to assemble through-hole components on circuit boards. The technology has enabled Kamstrup to increase throughput by 20 percent and reclaim 6 meters of factory floor space.
Kamstrup’s production team wanted to transition from wave soldering technology to selective soldering technology to enhance automation and improve process control. However, most of the selective soldering systems the team evaluated took up too much floor space. Some systems were 9 meters long, which exceeded the available floor capacity.
That challenge was solved with a Select Synchro 5 soldering machine from Nordson Electronics Solutions. With a compact length of 2.5 meters, the system fit within Kamstrup’s existing through-hole line. Better still, the new machine provided 20 percent more throughput compared with the company’s original selective soldering machines.
To ensure full confidence in the investment, Kamstrup conducted a production‑scale evaluation at Nordson Electronics Solutions’ facility in Valkenswaard, Netherlands. Hundreds of circuit board assemblies were processed on the Select Synchro. The test allowed Kamstrup to validate quality and ensure risk‑free adoption.
“That helpful information confirmed our decision to invest in the Select Synchro with zero risk of not achieving our production targets,” says Kasper Neubert, production engineer at Kamstrup. “After extensive planning and testing, we are happy to complete this project with such good results. If the Synchro system had not been available, we would have had to redesign our entire through-hole assembly line. Instead, we saved 6 meters in total line length, advanced our automation, and gained a 20 percent jump in output.”
Once the system was approved, Nordson and regional partner SmartTec Nordic collaborated closely to ensure smooth installation, training and startup support.
“The Nordson team kept their on‑time delivery promise, and the SmartTec Nordic team followed through with superb service, training, and installation,” says Neubert. “We are looking forward to identifying new projects at Kamstrup for a possible second Select Synchro.”
