Costa Rica Expands Its Footprint in Global Medical Device Manufacturing

SAN JOSÉ, Costa Rica— Costa Rica has become a major global center for medical device manufacturing, driven by sustained export growth, expanding production capacity and a deepening local supply chain, according to a new analysis of the sector.
The study, "The World’s Health Is Made in Costa Rica," conducted by the Trade & Investment Promotion Agency of Costa Rica (PROCOMER), shows the country recorded an average annual growth rate of 22% in medical device exports from 2020 to 2024. Export value reached $8.675 billion, positioning Costa Rica as the world’s 10th-largest medical device exporter and the leading exporter on a per-capita basis.
Manufacturing activity in the sector continues to accelerate. Medical devices now account for 48% of Costa Rica’s total goods exports and are produced for markets across the Americas, Europe and Asia. PROCOMER data show exports reached $9.199 billion as of October 2025, a 30% increase year-over-year.
Costa Rica has also emerged as a key destination for medical device manufacturing investment, accounting for 52% of all new investment in the sector across Latin America. It is the third-largest global recipient of foreign direct investment projects in medical devices. More than 100 companies from the United States, Germany, Ireland, Sweden, Japan and Spain operate manufacturing facilities in the country, producing devices for applications including endoscopy, cardiology, orthopedics, ophthalmology, diagnostics and advanced surgical procedures.
The country currently manufactures and exports 164 different medical device products to 88 markets. The largest product categories include needles, catheters and cannulas, which represent 41.5% of exports. The United States is the primary destination, receiving 66.5% of exports, with the Netherlands and Belgium also serving as major markets.
