NUREMBERG, Germany—Leoni AG is expanding its manufacturing activity in the Middle East and Africa with two new wire harness assembly plants in Egypt. The additional facilities in Badr City are expected to be running at full capacity by the end of next year.
Leoni’s new Badr 5 plant will feature advanced automation and more machine-human interaction compared to the traditional wiring harness manufacturing. The company claims that it will enable it to “push the boundaries of standardized automated processes.”
In addition to its operations in Egypt, Leoni has assembly plants in Morocco and Tunisia that produce cable harnesses and wiring systems for European automakers and suppliers.
The Egyptian government has launched a national program to localize and develop its automotive industry, aiming to build a strong, competitive and fully integrated manufacturing ecosystem. The country already is a hotspot for assembling cars, buses and trucks. It is home to numerous assembly plants operated by companies such as BMW, General Motors, Hyundai, Nissan and Toyota.
A variety of Chinese automakers have also been investing heavily in Africa, which is ripe territory for electric vehicles.
