Volkswagen Ends ID.4 Assembly In Chattanooga, Shifts Focus To Atlas Production

CHATTANOOGA, TN—Volkswagen is ending assembly of its ID.4 electric vehicle at its Chattanooga plant and shifting production toward higher-volume models, as the automaker adjusts its U.S. manufacturing strategy to align with market demand.
Production of the ID.4 will conclude in mid-April, with the plant refocusing on the launch of the next-generation Atlas, which is scheduled to begin production this summer for the 2027 model year. The Atlas has been one of Volkswagen’s top-selling vehicles in the U.S., ranking second for the past three years.
The move reflects broader challenges in the EV market, where automakers continue to balance investment with uncertain demand. Volkswagen said the shift is intended to prioritize high-volume vehicles that support sustained growth in North America.
The Chattanooga facility will remain a central part of Volkswagen’s U.S. manufacturing footprint, with the company also exploring the addition of a new vehicle program tailored to U.S. consumer demand.
The production change comes as Volkswagen continues to navigate its first labor contract with the United Auto Workers at the plant. The agreement, reached earlier this year, marked a shift in the facility’s operating structure and introduced new dynamics around workforce management, job security and production planning.
As part of the transition, employees currently assigned to ID.4 production will be reassigned to other roles within the plant based on seniority and in coordination with the union. Volkswagen is also offering an early retirement program for eligible workers.
The shift underscores the ongoing tension between electrification strategies and current market realities, as manufacturers adjust production mix while maintaining workforce stability under new labor agreements.
