NORMAL, IL—Powerful storms that recently whipped through central Illinois with 85 mph wind gusts damaged a small part of Rivian Automotive Inc.’s flagship assembly plant here. The southwest corner of the sprawling facility suffered a partially collapsed roof and wall.
The storm struck Building 2, which contains the body shop and general assembly area for Rivian’s new R2 sport utility vehicle.
Video footage captured by a local TV station showed a large gap in the building. Four garage doors on a shipping dock appeared to be completely destroyed.
The storm knocked out power to thousands of local residents. However, no injuries were reported at Rivian.
