WASHINGTON—The Commerce Department has proposed a 24 percent global tariff on steel shipments coming into the U.S. and a 7.7 tariff on imported aluminum.
BENTON HARBOR, MI—Whirlpool Corp. is adding 200 jobs after the Trump Administration imposed a tariff of up to 50 percent on large residential washing machines, a penalty aimed at imports from rivals Samsung Electronics Co. and LG Electronics Inc. The new full-time employees will work at an assembly plant in Clyde, OH.

WASHINGTON—Invoking powers the U.S. hasn’t used in more than a quarter century, the Trump administration has begun an investigation into Chinese aluminum imports that could lead to tariffs. The Commerce Department is taking the unusual step of initiating the case itself, rather than going through the regular route of starting an investigation based on petitions filed by U.S. companies.
In his August 2017 editorial, “Tariff Debate Pits Producers Against Consumers,” chief editor John Sprovieri clearly posed the dilemma of low-priced Chinese steel imports, which have severely impacted the U.S. steel industry.
In April, President Donald Trump made good on a campaign promise and ordered the Commerce Department to conduct a “Section 232” review of steel imports. A provision of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962, Section 232 authorizes the gov-ernment to take action to limit imports of products if they threaten national security.
