Chinese Automaker Chery May Hire Nissan to Assemble Cars in the UK
Nissan could begin making Chery vehicles in 2027.

SUNDERLAND, UK—Nissan may soon produce cars for Chinese automotive OEM Chery International at its assembly plant here.
Under the terms of a non-binding memorandum of understanding, the automakers will determine the feasibility of Nissan assembling passenger vehicles for Chery at the Sunderland plant. The factory would remain fully owned by Nissan, and workers there would still be employed by Nissan.
The Sunderland plant features two parallel assembly lines. In May, Nissan announced that it would consolidate its manufacturing operations onto Line Two to open opportunities to increase plant utilization. Line Two currently assembles the Nissan Qashqai, Juke and Leaf. Nissan could begin producing Chery vehicles on Line One in fiscal year 2027.
“This is an important step forward for our operations,” says Massimiliano Messina, chairman for Nissan’s Africa, Middle East, India, Europe and Oceania region. “We are looking forward to working with Chery International in the coming months to finalize a position that is optimal for both companies.”
The Sunderland factory employs some 6,000 people.Looking for quick answers on assembly and manufacturing topics? Try Ask ASM, our new smart AI search tool. Ask ASM
