TAMIL NADU, India—Renault Nissan Automotive India Pvt Ltd's manufacturing plant in Oragadam, Tamil Nadu, has reached a milestone by producing over 4.5 million powertrain units since its inception in 2010. This expansive 600-acre facility supplies powertrain units for both domestic and international markets, catering to Renault and Nissan.
To date, the plant has manufactured more than 2.75 million vehicles for both brands and has developed seven engine types alongside three gearbox types. Within the total production of 4.5 million powertrain units, the breakdown includes 2.83 million engines and 1.67 million gearboxes. Notably, the facility has also exported over 160,000 electric vehicle reducer components.
“This production milestone is a proud achievement for RNAIPL,” stated Keerthi Prakash, Managing Director of Renault Nissan Automotive India Pvt Ltd. “Not only do we support our Chennai plant’s vehicle production, but we also supply powertrain units globally. With the Renault Nissan alliance’s $600 million investment, we are enhancing our infrastructure to accommodate engines and gearboxes for upcoming models.”
The plant excels in producing engine components, including precision-machined cylinder heads and blocks, with engine and gearbox assembly conducted on-site. It is capable of manufacturing engines ranging from 800 cc to 1500 cc and supports gearbox production through advanced processes such as gear and shaft machining, clutch housing fabrication, and gear heat treatment.
As a significant joint venture between global automakers Renault and Nissan, Renault Nissan Automotive India Pvt Ltd (RNAIPL) is headquartered in Chennai and plays a vital role in the growth strategies of both companies in India and other emerging markets. The facility stands out as one of the largest of its kind in India, recognized for its advanced manufacturing processes and high level of automation, producing a diverse range of vehicles from compact cars to SUVs.
