TOKYO—Mitsubishi Motors Corp. plans to launch a new electric vehicle in North America that will be based on the next-generation of the Nissan Leaf. The EV will be available during the second half of 2026.
Mitsubishi is also working with Foxtron Vehicle Technologies, a subsidiary of Hon Hai Technology Group (Foxconn), to develop an EV that will be marketed in Australia and New Zealand. That vehicle, which may look like the photo above, will be assembled in Taiwan by Yulon Motor Co.
“We are delighted to develop and supply an electric vehicle to Mitsubishi Motors Corp. and look forward to a collaboration that will complement both parties and drive both business expansions,” says Young Liu, chairman of Foxconn.
In 2022, Foxconn acquired GM’s former Lordstown assembly plant and has hinted that it plans to produce EVs there. It has recently been using the site to assemble the MK-V for start-up Monarch Tractor.
Mitsubishi is part of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance. Its former assembly plant in Normal, IL, is now the home of Rivian Automotive Inc.
