TOKYO—Toyota Motor Corp. has launched Toyota Woven City in Susono, Japan, to promote next-generation mobility, such as battery-powered autonomous vehicles. The goal of the futuristic complex is to develop new ways of living and moving.
According to Toyota, Woven City “will serve as a platform to expand the concept of mobility beyond transportation, reimagining how the movement of people, goods, information and energy…can inspire progress in daily life and across society.”
Woven City seeks to foster Kakezan―a Japanese concept of "multiplication," where new innovation and societal value emerge from the convergence of different ideas and capabilities.
Residents will include “inventors” (enterprises, start-ups, entrepreneurs, research institutions and other innovators developing and testing products and services) and “weavers” (early adopters interested in experiencing new products and services firsthand and providing feedback).
New types of transportation featured in Woven City will include the e-Palette (photo above), an autonomous vehicle powered by a lithium-ion battery. The 16-foot-long minibus features a spacious interior that can accommodate up to 17 passengers. It has a top speed of 50 mph and a range of 155 miles.
