DETROIT—Thieves stole nearly a dozen new Ram pickup trucks, Jeep SUVs and Dodge Durangos from a temporary storage lot near Stellantis’s Detroit Assembly Complex–Jefferson in the early morning hours of Feb. 11.
The theft took place around 3 a.m. on Wednesday morning at a third-party transportation lot at the corner of Conner Street and Mack Avenue on the city’s east side. Authorities say that the culprits managed to breach the perimeter fence surrounding the lot before using stolen vehicles to open up a larger hole to escape through.
Investigators say that around a dozen vehicles were stolen from the property, including models from the Ram, Jeep, and Dodge brands, but specifics are not available beyond that the Dodges were Durangos. One vehicle became stuck in the rather deep snow on the embankment used as the escape route, and authorities were able to safely recover that specific unit.
"Stellantis is working with the Detroit Police Department regarding the theft of several vehicles from a lot managed by a third party near the Detroit Assembly Complex–Jefferson,” the automaker told CBS in a statement. “As this is an open investigation, the company is not providing any additional details on this incident."
This isn’t the first time that the assembly plant has been the target for this type of large-scale hit. Thieves have targeted the factory multiple times over the past few years.Looking for quick answers on assembly and manufacturing topics? Try Ask ASM, our new smart AI search tool. Ask ASM
